No matter what type of truck you’re purchasing to use in the oil field, there are a few questions you should ask during the process. The one question you don’t need to ask is: “Who makes the best swab rigs?” You already know the answer to that one. It’s Tiger General. What sorts of questions should you ask before buying? We’re glad you asked.
If it’s used, make sure it hasn’t been abused
We wrote a post, way back in 2014, about tips for purchasing used oil field trucks. The cliffnotes version of the post has six highlights:
- Check the fluids
- Look for welds, rusts, cracks, etc.
- Review the maintenance log
- Start it up
- Fan the fumes
- Just ask
Sure, the first five things are very important, but the sixth recommendation is one that many people often neglect. There’s usually a reason why someone is selling a used product. If it’s a truck, the hope should be that the company is just upgrading it’s equipment and looking to replace their current fleet.
However, if there are issues with it, the best thing you can do is ask pointed questions: What has the truck been through? Where was the truck used? What’s the maintenance history? These are all questions you will want to know before even heading out to see the truck.
Ideally, a great person would disclose all of the necessary information up front, but a decent person will make sure to answer your questions truthfully.
Purchasing a New Truck
Purchasing a new truck is usually much less of a risk than purchasing used equipment. If it’s new it should be good to go. However, if there are any customizations or add ons it’s important to know them ahead of time. Also, make sure it actually has everything that was included in the advertisement. New trucks should also come with a warranty.
